Job Description

Core Responsibilities

A high school basketball coach is responsible for developing student-athletes both on and off the court.

1. Coaching & Skill Development

• Plan and lead daily practices (drills, conditioning, scrimmages)
• Teach fundamentals: shooting, passing, defense, teamwork
• Develop game strategies and adjust during competition
• Analyze performance and provide feedback

2. Game Management

• Organize lineups, substitutions, and tactics during games
• Scout opponents and prepare game plans
• Ensure players understand plays and roles

3. Player Development & Mentorship

• Promote sportsmanship, discipline, and teamwork
• Support athletes’ academic progress and eligibility
• Act as a mentor and positive role model

Administrative Duties

• Schedule practices, games, and travel
• Communicate with school administration, parents, and athletic directors
• Maintain equipment and uniforms
• Track stats, records, and player progress
• Ensure compliance with school policies and athletic regulations (often tied to organizations like the National Federation of State High School Associations)

Safety & Supervision

• Ensure safe training environments
• Monitor players for injuries and coordinate with trainers
• Enforce rules regarding conduct and safety

Program Building

• Help build a positive team culture
• Organize tryouts and select team members
• Develop feeder programs or youth outreach (in some schools)
• Represent the school in the community

Job Qualifications

Qualifications 

• Knowledge of basketball rules and strategies
• Previous playing or coaching experience high school level preferred
• Strong communication and leadership skills
• Coaching certification is required 
• CPR/First Aid certification is required

Time Commitment

• Daily practices during the season
• Games multiple times per week
• Off-season conditioning, camps, or planning
