GENERAL MECHANIC
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
The work involves the performance or supervision of general building and grounds maintenance work. Included are duties such as heating, ventilating, plumbing and electrical maintenance and repairs. The General Mechanic is also responsible for assisting in the maintenance and repair work on school buses and other school vehicles. The work is performed under the general supervision of a higher-ranking employee with some latitude permitted for the exercise of independent judgment in carrying out work assignments. Supervision may be exercised over a number of subordinate employees assigned to assist in maintenance and repair activities.
A General Mechanic also does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Supervises or performs maintenance and repair work to heating and ventilating systems, steam lines, plumbing, electrical wiring and mechanical equipment;
Makes inspections of property to determine need for maintenance work or repairs;
Prepares estimates of time and materials require for repairs;
Maintains daily records of time and materials expended in maintenance and repair projects;
Assists in the maintenance and repair of school buses and other school district vehicles.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:
Good knowledge of modern buildings and grounds maintenance and repair practices;
Good knowledge of acceptable automotive repair techniques and of the terminology and tools of the trade;
Familiarity with the operation and maintenance of heating systems; ability to plan and supervise the work of others;

Ability to prepare estimates for maintenance and repair projects; mechanical aptitude;
Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
